Cycling and Biking
Guests are welcome to bring their Bikes. There is easy, flat and safe cycling from our accommodation along the Monmouth and Breconshire Canal for the whole of the family to enjoy.
The canal tow path can be accessed directly from Ty Newydd. If you head one way it leads to the canal basin in Brecon (4 miles). The other way is 30 miles to Newport, passing through the village of Talybont-on-usk (4 miles). Brecon and Talybont are both the start “hubs” for several circular graded Mountain Bike routes developed for beginners to experienced cyclists. www.mtbbreconbeacons.co.uk, www.cyclebreconbeacons.com
You can arrange hire with a Bikes and Hikes based in Talybont-on-Usk. They operate a delivery and collection service and also provide useful guides.
You may indeed be arriving on you bike as we are just off a National Cycle Route (8) and Taff Trail. We have safe bike storage facilities and there are plenty of local pubs within walking distance to revive your strength.
Walking and Hiking
For walkers the Brecon Beacons National Park is our back garden. You can take your pick from a gentle stroll along the tow path, to an energetic hike up the Beacons, even walks to include forests, waterfalls, reservoirs and historic industrial trials.
Here are a few popular local walks.
- The Beacons Northern Horseshoe – a classic and popular walk around the 3 peaks of the central Beacons. We are just 10 minutes away from the start at Cwn Gwdi Army Camp.
- Alternatively you could head down the road to Talybont-on-usk to walk up to the reservoir, forests and waterfalls, or follow the interesting route of the old Brinore tramroad.
- From the house you can walk through the village of Llanfrynach up through the woods, streams and hills to the satisfying height of Fan y Big
- Finally you could take it abit easier and do a circular route up through fields into Brecon town itself via the Cathedral and then back along the tow path, avoiding all main roads.
Canal Boats
We are located next to Cambrian Cruisers Marina where Cambrian Cruisers run a hire fleet of traditional steel canal boats. They offer weekly and short breaks. Why not combine a canal boat trip with a Bed and Breakfast or self-catering holiday.
