Ty Newydd is in the central area of the Brecon Beacon national park so a great base to access the four main regions – the Black Mountain West, Fforest Fawr (Great Forest), the Brecon Beacons in the centre, and the Black Mountains East. The Farmhouse is south facing looking down the Usk Valley, with views of the Brecon Beacons mountains themselves. The stunning Monmouth and Brecon canal is situated only 100 metres from the door, and the colourful boat marina, has become a much loved and photographed spot.
About 1hr15mins, 6.5km/4miles each way from the house to the canal basin, finishing at the Brecon Theatre. Once in Brecon town, a circular walk round the most interesting sights and historical facts of Brecon can also be accessed online via “The Brecon Story” www.breconstory.wales/walk or a leaflet can be picked up from the VisitBrecon Tourist Office, or from your accommodation.
If you would like a slight detour you can walk from Ty Newydd to Brynich Lock (40 mins) then walk up to Groesffordd village and then take a turn along the Slwch Lane over the fields to Brecon and up to Brecon Cathedral and return back along the Canal. Approximately 16km/10miles (relatively flat).
5 hr, 16km/10miles. This trail takes you up to the summits of Fan y Big from the village of Llanfrynach, only a 10 minute walk from the holiday accommodation. This path approaches the peaks from the northern side of the beacons with a much lower footfall, rather than those starting from the popular Pont ar Daf car park. This route is one of the more challenging approaches up into the mountains and the satisfying circular loop will take about 5hrs. The summit of Fan y Big is an excellent viewpoint to the rest of the horseshoe ridge and famous peaks of the Beacons. There is a stone diving board that sticks out and provides some excellent photo opportunities.
We are very centrally located for Mountain walks both in the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. The iconic Pen-y-Fan, Corn du and Cribyn range can be accessed from the house and are “do-able” for fit and experienced hikers or they can be accessed at more moderate distances with a short drive to one of the main starting points (Pont ar Daf / Storey Arms and Cwm Gwdi Training Camp). We provide Ordnance Survey maps and some suggested routes in all our accommodation.
Our “local”. About 30 minutes' walk along the picturesque Monmouth and Brecon Canal accessed from the bottom of our holiday accommodation. Just the perfect length to build up a thirst. Leave the property, cross over the bridge onto the Canal and head in the direction of the Mountains. The canal circles back round to Pencelli where you can access the Pub via the Beer Garden. Brecknockshire CAMRA Pub of the Year.
There is family safe cycling from the door along the canal. Four miles to Brecon in one direction, and 32 miles in the opposite direction going through Talybont-on-Usk and onto Crickhowell and beyond. Bikes and Hikes and Drover Cycle Holidays hire out bikes and can deliver to your property.
Our Canadian canoe is available to hire exclusively for Ty Newydd guests only. It is suitable for 2/3 Adults or 2 Adults plus 2 small children and costs £25, and it is yours for the day. Explore the Mon and Brec Canal towards Talybont-on-Usk where you can stop at cafes and canal side pubs. Life jackets available. If you would like to reserve the Kayak, please let us know when you arrive.
